Cables, stainless steel, laser cut rusting steel (text)
Commissioned for Hadley Learning Community, Telford
This work is composed of thousands of components cut from steel, suspended from fine woven stainless steel wires.
The components take the form of letters, and the surface of the steel is tarnished to achieve the vibrant reddish colour of rust. These letters are assembled so that lines of text can be seen from certain angles. Referencing the industrial heritage of the surrounding areas, the letters form exerpts from historical texts relating to engineering achievements of Telford.
From the side (seen from entrance and mezzanine) the forms created by these feel quite organic and abstract. From directly below the dense collections of components take the shape of large letters: R E A D
